Team Basics

What Everyone Should Know

So you're thinking about joining swim team.

Swim Team = Competition - Physical Fitness - Fun - Teamwork - Dedication - Commitment - Friendships!

There are several factors to consider when deciding if swim team is right for you.  First be sure you really like water, you will be spending a lot of time in and around the pool!  Second you must be able to pass the tryout requirements for your age group.  Contact a coach or the aquatics director for more details.

On the YMCA Swim Team, every swimmer is a champion.  Swimming is a wonderful sport with benefits to the body and mind.  Everyone knows the health benefits--a great aerobic exercise that is nonviolent to the body.  But did you know that swimming will help your child become a better time manager and, as a consequence, probably a better student?  Most importantly, character development is an integral aspect of YMCA swimming.  Our program offers an excellent opportunity to learn the values of caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect.

Goal setting is an important part of being a good swimmer. Following are some guidelines:

  • set realistic goals based on your present ability (as goals are reached you will be able to set new goals).
  • set specific and detailed goals - the more specific and detailed the easier it will be to recognize that the goal has been reached. Include a time -define when you want to reach the goals
  • set measurable goals - ( word the question so you simply have to ask "Have I reached this goal?)
  • set goals based on your performance not on the performance of someone else. (aim for your best don't try to do what someone else is doing)
  • set positive goals indicating what you want to achieve
  • set long term and short term goals
  • write your goals down - you can refer back to them as needed.
